After getting overwhelmingly positive feedback on our Pong Deck shirts we brought to the World Series of Beer Pong we really started to notice a gap in beer pong apparel. Pong Deck and WSOBP Reflections!

With our first World Series of Beer Pong under our belt (as a vendor/spectator at WSOBP VI), it’s safe to say that it is one of the most memorable experiences to be had! The energy, competitiveness, and intensity was that of any big game in any professional sport. With that said, we also learned a lot about the sport while we were there. Here are a few of our observations:

1) There are two types of competitors…

The first is the type who sends a barrage of insults and profanities your way just before you shoot. They flail their arms inches behind your target trying to get into your head. And if they do, they own you.
The second type is strong silent kind. If you can’t make it without a distraction, they know you are your own worst enemy and simply let the self-destruction begin.

2) You gotta look good…

The majority of teams sport some sort of “costume” or “uniform” from sweet team tee-shirts to full on German lederhosen outfits (That team was really from Germany too) and a fake baby Carlos hanging from your belly. If your going to play in the biggest beer pong tournament in the world, why not do it in style?!

3) You’re never quite alone…

Affiliations run deep in the WSOBP. It may start off as a SoCal vs AZ team, but it can quickly turn into a West coast vs East coast round and finish with a USA vs Canada. In the end, someones got your back.

4) The best players don’t use excuses…

When you get down to the final 4 teams battling it out for 50K and you see a player nailing his shots while on crutches, you can’t help but think “that guy’s a bad-ass”!!

5) Sometimes the best distractions are fake boobies….hahaha

Now, every guy generally loves boobs and knows that they can be a distraction, but when it’s a GUY who has the boobs it’s even worse. Sean Foster made the decision to dress up as a….transvestite hooker. The blond wig, the 5” heeled knee high boots, the fake boobs and ass, and a corset was the winning combo to get his team into the “sweet 16”. Did they make it that far because they were also good? That probably had something to do with it too.

6) We all serve the same master….

Whether you’re playing for the fun of it or you’re seeded to finish top 5, in the end, it’s still the love of beer pong that unites every player, every team, and every country in this amazing event.

Thoughts on the “Elbow Rule”

Coming back from the WSOBP over the past week in Las Vegas I must first say, WOW! I have heard how fun, electric and intense the WSOBP is but this is truly you must see to believe. The energy that courses through the Flamingo Casino Desert Ballroom is absolutely electric. I HIGHLY recommend taking the time next year to travel to Vegas Jan 1-5th for WSOBP 7. Flights are usually really cheap right after the first of the year and regardless it’s worth the trip.

With all that being said Kyle and myself witnessed hundreds of matches and in those hundreds of matches one thing is evident, leaning is absolutely in effect. House “elbow rules” are literally thrown out the window in favor of leaning as far as possible when shooting.

If you have ever taken a look through the Bpong Forums you can read several threads about the positives and negatives of the elbow rule and even more recently on www.guysgirl.com where she shreds players and the lack of having a rule.

Im here to say that not having an elbow rule is absolutely fine in my book, especially at the WSOBP. There are literally a hundred game going on at one time and with having that many games going on their would be no way to police how far a person’s elbow extended over the table. So in order to diminish arguments you simply have to allow it.

Does an opponent that is taller or has a longer reach have an advantage? Well on paper I guess you would say yes, but that isnt entirely true when it comes to real life. No matter how long your reach the bottom line is it comes down to SKILL. Just because you are a 205lb ripped body builder doesnt mean you could stand a chance in a fight. Also take a look at the WSOBP final table 3 out of the four guys where absolutely average in height, with the fourth guy Nick Syrigos being a bit taller than average. Were their taller players with longer reaches in the WSOBP? You bet your ass there was, but they werent on the final table, although monster “Goliath” whom can reach to past the middle of the table and Andy D of “Last of Dying Breed” made it pretty close finishing 3rd.

Bottom line from my perspective is it always comes down to skill. Being tall doesnt make you a basketball player, being ripped doesnt make you a fighter and having a long reach doesnt make you a Beer Pong Stud.
